India's capital Rises to Hazardous Smog Post Diwali

As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "severe" category.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of Delhi registered an air quality index above 500, which represents ten times the recommended level established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x higher than acceptable levels.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Changes

For the past four years, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that blankets the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

Nevertheless in recent months, the recently formed city administration petitioned the judicial authority to request a easing of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and public health".

Legal Decision and Reality

To the disappointment of environmental and health advocates, judges approved the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated periods throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Many monitoring devices throughout the capital registered pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe readings recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.

International Effects

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants coming from across the border following the festivities.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have remained as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

Near the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particles in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak records ever recorded in Beijing, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Contamination Factors

The situation in the city is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the city as colder air sets in.

Health and Financial Consequences

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to various research.

This pollution causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand early deaths per year in the capital.
