Lando Norris just pipped team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the closing stages of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the points lead from Piastri by one point after winning in Mexico City recently, beat the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Piastri had been the leading McLaren during the running before sprint qualifying scheduled for 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the championship fight, sitting with a 36-point deficit Norris, finished in 17th place as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, albeit lightly, when he lost control at the fourth corner during the early running. The Japanese spun out over the track edges before spinning across the run-off area, and was fortunate to avoid just a minor contact of the wall. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also had a spin, at the conclusion of the session, rotating twice through the quick descending corner leading to the last turn on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion finished practice in 19th place, one place behind teammate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the other competitors, with the German's car P3, over half a second off the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
