Time is optimal to switch Man Utd's formation - Ruben Amorim declares.

Head coach Ruben Amorim contends that changing Man Utd's formation due to public pressure would have signaled "the finish" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his customary three-at-the-back setup with wing-backs and instead field an traditional four-man defense shielded by two holding midfielders.

He himself conceded this ultimately functioned as a six-man defensive block in the latter minutes as his team clung on for a crucial result - securing just their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

Despite he once notably remarked that even the Pope could compel him to adjust his approach, Amorim maintains the option to utilize different setups has consistently been part of his strategy.

Yet, he stresses he could solely alter the tactics when his team were performing well enough - otherwise it would appear as if he was giving in to outside noise.

"At the time I came here the previous campaign, I recognized perhaps I didn't possess the personnel to play well in that system, but it was the start of a process," he commented.

"We were trying to forge an identity. Today is a separate juncture. We lack a full complement of personnel, and we need adapt, so they comprehend the reason we are switching things up.

"It is not because of the demands of you guys, or the supporters.

"When you talk about altering the formation constantly, I can't change because the players will understand I'm changing because of external voices and I believe that is the end for the coach.

"When we are getting results in our system, that is the opportunity to evolve.

"We will grow into a more complete team because when all the players are back, we are not planning to play with a back three exclusively."

Squad Issues Loom Large

Having only two victories in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is accurate to state his side have been playing well.

He is, nonetheless, operating with a injury-ravaged squad, with seven senior stars already ruled out for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will increase if playmaker Mason Mount fails to shake off the knock that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, even though he is understood to be urging his manager to allow him to make a comeback after his hamstring problem.

"Bruno is already insisting he has to practice," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No chance. You can quote me on that."

Fernandes' Role Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will likely still be a prominent presence, as while most unavailable players view matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to continue offering input.

"The guy is a leader," he stated. "He must not be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's not talking and offering advice. He's always communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"He has negative aspects sometimes - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of good things. After he finishes treatment, he heads to watch the rest of the squad training. There are a lot of things you don't see.

"I don't know if he wants my job or not, but he's a leader. He is a leader."

Return Timeline for Injured Players

While the exact date for the captain's comeback - and that of other injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unclear, before the conclusion of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
